Andrea thought that she needed to do something crazy to mark and celebrate the end of her six-year undergraduate career, including her Psychology Honours year. Given that she also needed a holiday, she planned a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to a continent previously unexplored by herself, as well as many of her family and friends: South America. Being a man with a tireless sense of adventure and a hunger for discovering the incredible (and sometimes the not-so-incredible), Niall jumped at the invitation to accompany Andrea and share her South American experience.
Over the course of six weeks in 2010 and 2011, we travelled overland from Santiago, Chile, through Bolivia, to Lima, Peru. Along the way, we adjusted to the thin air of the Andes, experienced the Atacama Desert (the driest place on Earth), crossed the Altiplano to the surreal Salar de Uyuni, encountered the thriving culture of Lake Titicaca, conquered the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in the centenary year of its rediscovery, saw the grandeur of the Colca Canyon (which is more than twice as deep as North America’s Grand Canyon) and experienced many more wonders before gorging on seafood in South America’s gastronomic capital!! We spoke very little Spanish, had no experience living (let alone trekking!) at high altitudes, and had never travelled together for longer than a week… Since then, we have discovered a mutual love for the outdoors and discovering new places.
This is a blog of our adventures and travels (either separately or together), which was named in honour of our South American travel group. It is a hobby we have undertaken in our spare time, and posts will often be added at our convenience or retrospectively.
